Inter·GLAM (I·G) is a European project, co-funded by DG JUST at the European Commission, running from July 2021 to June 2023, which will co-produce a thematic track on ‘Global perspectives on addictions and drug markets’ of the 4th European Conference on addictive behaviours and dependencies in Lisbon (LxAddictions22, 23-25 November 2022), and award up to 120 I·G bursaries to conference participants who could otherwise not attend the event.

Global scope of the problem: Drug use is IG drug trade mapan increasing lifestyle trend worldwide; and addiction and the poly-criminality of the drug market constitute a virtually global health and socioeconomic problem. Globalisation facilitates trade.
Recent developments in context: The global COVID pandemic and geopolitical developments will cause more recent disruptions and shifts in drug use and transit operations which require updated analysis.

Inter·GLAM will address diverse topics, with expert working groups on 5 interlinked areas within the track:

  • Global issues: how are socio-demographic, technological, political, environmental and other global challenges impacting on substance use, associated problems and markets?
  • New market challenges: market flows, novel and new psychoactive substances and medicinal products.
  • Drug use, lifestyles and settings: socio-cultural contexts and physical environments, voices from impacted communities.
  • Recognising global diversity in public health responses; putting evidence into practice in different cultures and settings (translational aspects and transferability).
  • Impact of the global public health crisis on the addictions field.

Inter-GLAM is also organizing a cinema and video competition at LxAddictions22. [Read more about it here]

The project will also set up and strengthen global networks and working groups, with the aim of sustaining and extending collabprations in addiction science beyond the duration of Inter·GLAM.

The Inter·GLAM project outputs come in 3 formats:

  • Transparency and Sustainability: the project reports (deliverables) written with the aim of providing sufficient theoretical and methodological detail to strengthen future multi-sectoral international co-creation and global networking initiatives in addiction and drug fields and disciplines.

Forthcoming work linked to LxAddictions 24

A new European project, WAVE – Workforce in Addictions · Valorisation in Europe will contribute to the next Lisbon Addictions conference. You can find more information about WAVE and ways to participate on the WAVE website: https://wave-addictionsworkforce.eu/

The InterGLAM working groups represented collaborative efforts between multi-disciplinary professionals on the topics of the InterGLAM track in Lisbon Addictions 2022, to produce briefing documents, sessions and publications in 5 priority areas (and strengthened applications fo an I·G bursary).

In preparation for the co-produced thematic track 'Global perspectives on addictions and drug markets' of the 4th European Conference on Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies (LxAddictions22), Inter·GLAM created multi-sectoral, international working groups focused on the five sub-topics of the Inter·GLAM track (see below). Each group comprised multi-disciplinary professionals, who participated in virtual working meetings with the following goals:

  • Act as a panel of experts on priorities for the five sub-topics in different parts of the world;
  • Gather and organize information on the sub-topics and input to a scoping paper for possible publication;
  • Collaborate on the co-creation of the Inter·GLAM track;
  • Identify relevant organizations and potential applicants for attendance bursaries at LxAddictions22

Participation in one or more working groups on the sub-topics was compatible with an application for a conference attendance bursary, and such collaboration was favourably considered in the competitive selection process.

5 research areas identified by the Inter·GLAM working groups, each representing a specific knowledge gap that was identified and addressed through the course of the group work:
